Self-Definition

From May 25, 2001

In reading about developing employee handbooks for businesses, I came across the phrase, “What you do defines who you are, and what you believe in should be a basis for how you act.” Think about that for a moment.

The idea itself is not a new one. We are told this most of our lives by a variety of people ranging from parents and religious leaders to teachers and friends. The things that I do, whether I like it or not, define who I am. And the things that I believe in should be the model for how I act.

If some future descendant of mine happens to look back in time and wonder who I was, will they know by my works the kind of person that I am? Will I have led the kind of life that reflects not just my beliefs and values, but also my goals? Certainly it leaves a lot for me to ponder. In the last Newsletter I wrote, "I, for one, believe that it is our day-to-day happenings that create who we are….”

It is my wish, that not only do we lead the kind of lives that define ourselves in a positive way, but that we use every bit of the courage we gain through our day-to-day living, to attain our goals, and to make the courage to live the way we believe.

Leonardo DaVinci certainly led the kind of life that defined himself as one of the greatest minds of all time.  He must have been a courageous soul.
