Light (January 2011)

From January 13, 2011

Seeing oneself for what others see is impossible.  No matter how much someone else tells us about ourselves, our own view will forever be skewed and slanted to how we perceive ourselves.  If someone tells us we are beautiful and we see ourselves as something less, no amount of convincing will change our own perspective.  If someone tells us we are selfish and we disbelieve, then it is not likely that someone will ever change our mind for us.

But sometimes we need to hear these things anyway.  We still need to be reminded that we are beautiful, even if we don't truly believe it.  We still need to be told when we are being selfish, even when we don't think we are.  We need these constant reminders, because it gives us a little perspective from a different angle -- an angle that is not coming from ourselves but from a different direction.

Sometimes holding a mirror up to ourselves isn't enough.  It isn't enough, because self-perception --how we truly see ourselves-- is extremely difficult to change.  That is why we need others to guide us and direct us to what is reality, even if our realities are not the same.  Ideally, those differing realities should merge into something that is as close as it is going to get... the most accurate picture of ourselves we will ever find.

Sometimes we need a little light in another color.... a little Warhol-esque wouldn't hurt.
